Stöß, Thomas

Thomas Stöß was born in Anklam on 12th December 1969. His first teachers were Gerd Fiedler (piano) and Friedrich Reichel (theory and composition) with whom he took lessons at the Clara Wieck Conservatorium in Plauen.

Before he started his degree he worked for a year at the theatre in Plauen as a ballet accompanist and composed a short suite of incidental music for Moliére's play "The Doctor in Spite of HImself" which was performed at the theatre in Freiberg.

From 1991 to 1998 he studied at the University of Music "Franz Liszt" Weimar where he took composition with Professor Antonius Streichart and Professor Reinhard Wolschina, piano with Professor Diethelm Müller-Nielsen and accompaniment and conducting with Professor Reinhard Geilert.

He has been working as a freelance composer since 1997 and also teaches piano and composition at the Municipal School of Music in Chemnitz, where he conducted the youth orchestra for a time 

He has had works commissioned by the Neubrandenburg Philharmonic, the Ernst Barlach Foundation in Güstrow and ensemble diX. Several of his works have appeared on CD and have been broadcast on the radio. He has worked with many renowned musicians, including the pianist Sheila Arnold, the conductor Nicolás Pasquet, the baritone Mario Hoff, Ensemble Sortisatio, Utrecht String Quartet, Trio pianOVo, ensemble diX and ensemble 01.

His piano pieces for children have become favourite choices for competitions.

In addition to solo and chamber works, Thomas Stöß has also written a piano concerto, a symphonic poem for large orchestra (Europa) and a latin mass for solo voices, choir and string orchestra (Missa Misericordiae).
