Das Werk thematisiert außergewöhnliche Ereignisse während des 1. Weltkriegs, vor allem an der Westfront Flanderns: Friedenssignale und vor allem das Erklingen von Weihnachtsliedern bringen die Kampfhandlungen zum Erliegen.
Der Bericht des Chronisten, aus der Feder von Heiner Boehncke, verbindet Originalton aus Briefen und Presseberichten, reflektierende Lyrik und Bibeltexte.
Schroffer Kontrast von kriegerischen Kämpfen und spontaner Verbrüderung ist Ausgangspunkt der kompositorischen Gestaltung. Im Zentrum stehen hierbei die geradezu irreal anmutenden Momente der Verwandlung, die einfache Melodien mit schier magischer Kraft in den Schützengräben herbeiführen. ...
